Sophie Spark has her work cut out for her. As an intern at a grand European hotel, she has to deal with snooty guests and their mischievous children, handsome newcomers and preparation for the famous New Year’s Eve Ball. But unexpected problems keep arising, and some of the guests are not who they pretend to be. Sophie soon finds herself in the middle of a perilous adventure--and at risk of losing not only her job but also her heart.
Combining humor, thrills, and romance as only Kerstin Gier can, A castle in the clouds is a feel-good read with lovable characters and an enchanting setting.
Abby’s Review 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This story was written by a German woman who wrote this story in a refreshingly simple, but unique way. The translation was a bit odd at first, as her writing style is different and the translator is British (so he/she uses words like rubbish and flat etc. if you are not used to it, it may take a moment to adjust). But, as soon as you adjust to the writing style it is a truly unique and amazing book. Gier uses all different idioms and phrases that in the midst of the greatest tension will have you giggling to yourself at her unique humor. She writes simple sentences that make this a perfect holiday book, as all you want to do is snuggle up and relax--this book does not require any re-reading or confusing scenes (my current English assignment is a book that I constantly have to reread and man is it stressful).
This book is set in the winter months with snow piling up and the holiday festivities surrounding the atmosphere and small secret flirtations and romances that blossom--these all add up to make it that amazing holiday read full of the cozy and comfort that the snowy months bring. This story also has a very realistic plot, with a hint of the absurd, that makes Sophie’s life all the more daunting and adventurous. A terrible boss (what’s new with bosses), a devilish child (what’s new with children--just kidding~) and some snooty girls (what’s new with rich kids) all make this story even more relatable as we have all dealt with people like one or all of the above and know the struggle it takes to handle the situation.
Gier also flawlessly makes an interesting and unique plot that is full of ups and downs and sideways and backward--you really cannot guess what she will do next! The main plot strikes itself at you and I thought “Oh this will be a cute story” But as time passes and a mystery unfolds the reader is taken completely off guard and is suddenly paying attention to every single detail (at least I was) and just when you think it is solved. Gier jumps out and says “SURPRISE you're wrong!” Which let me tell you, when you get to the rising action and see who the “bad guy” really is you’ll probably do a flip--I would have had I not been comfortably laying in my bed, or had the ability to actually do a flip. It was a truly shocking and amazing moment.
A story FULL of twists and turns and surprises (with a dash of some awesome feminism--there’s this one scene with a character named Ben, definitely keep a lookout for it, it’s awesome) each one is completely unexpected, you will never be too bored to read this story and it will grab your attention all through these winter months! A must-read in these next few months. All the cliches of characters are in this book, but none of the cliches of plot--and let me say Kerstin Gier has flawlessly molded a story of beautiful betrayal and mystery accented with cute humor. A perfect story for the months to come!
