Time for the next mixtape! Remember, this post is filled with spoilers so read at your own risk. Disclaimer: I made this playlist a few years ago so the songs are somewhat outdated. In my opinion, though they’re all still good songs.
Song (Artist): Explanation
We Are Young (Fun.): They’re all so young, teenagers caught in arguments between their mothers (who are all sisters) and aging grandfather. It’s not too hard to see what leads to irrational and what can only be referred to as a “this is our only shot” attitude. It also suggests an incident forgotten, as Cadence Sinclair Eastman has forgotten what happened on the island in recent years.
This Will Be Our Year (SMASH cast version): The story takes place over the course of several years, but one of the focal points of We Were Liars is the year Gat comes into Cadence's life. Gat is the son of one of her Aunt’s boyfriends and eventually romantic interest. Yes, the family situation is a little weird but also they’re cute together. Every year it seems to Cady that this is the year she will tell Gat she loves him.
Ocean Avenue (Yellow Card): And this story takes place at the beach! This family is rich and they have a private island! So rather than “Ocean Avenue”, maybe we could call this an “Ocean Island View”. This song is another good depiction of troublesome teens in love.
Bad Liar (Selena Gomez): Gat and Cady do in fact develop a relationship and try to hide it from their parents who could possibly tear them apart in the fight for Grandfather’s inheritance. During the present year Cady can’t help but think about Gat, she sends him mail constantly which remains unanswered.
The Saltwater Room (Owlcity): In all of her dreams of the “incident” Cady wakes up on the beach alone. Cold and wet she doesn’t remember how she got there. She’s always thought it was because she decided to go for an irrational midnight swim.
House Of Memories (Panic! At The Disco): On page 201 the truth comes out. The house of all of Cady’s childhood and memories on the island was burned to the ground at the hand of her and her cousins. She woke up in the ocean after jumping in to put out the fires on her clothes. Cady and her cousins burned down the house, they destroyed their own idyllic memories and remembers everything that has been plaguing the rest of her family for years.
Burning Down The House (Talking Heads): This song really explains itself. All I have to say is, “The dogs didn’t deserve it!!!”
Wash Away (Joe Purdy): Cady falls into silence and mourning once she remembers what she had done. It’s going to take time and effort to recover, for Cady and her whole family. Only after such terrible a terrible occurrence, the family is able to mend their fractures and come back together.
I absolutely loved how twisted We Were Liars was, and if you enjoyed it also I would HIGHLY recommend Genuine Fraud by the same author.
