The Tenth Girl

If you are looking to dive into a new, thought consuming psychological thriller, look no further, the Tenth Girl is a psychological thriller like no other. This book isn't out yet, but it will be released on the 24 of September.

Summary

This book is set in a wonderfully creepy Patagonian boarding school haunted by “Los Otros.” The story follows Mavi, a young girl escaping the consequences of her mother’s rebellious actions against the government. She flees to the ancient and dilapidated Vaccaro boarding school on the edge of a desolate Patagonian cliff. Mavi must navigate teaching English to her students who are barely younger than she is within the confines of the eery boarding school, all while facing the invisible others. The story is also partly told by Angel, who is an other himself. Angel must come to terms with the fact that he is not like Mavi and her and learn to accept what comes with being an other. The story is full of twists and turns and ends with a twist you won’t see coming.

Review

I don’t usually read Thrillers, but the setting and the use of Patagonian myth drew me in from the minute I saw this book. The author paints such a vivid picture of the boarding school and its surroundings. I could see the ice cliffs, the fog, and the uniformed girls walking the dark, musty hallways. I loved the author’s wonderfully unique writing style, as well. There were so many small details that perfectly connected the story to the country that it’s set in, Argentina, and it’s culture. Her use of traditional Argentine foods had me smelling Milanesa and craving Medialunas. Even if you’ve never been to Argentina, you’ll understand and share the longing for its wonderful cuisine. Faring’s words easily transported me to the desolate Patagonian coast and the Vaccaro school. I was consumed by the story and the journey of the characters. The story developed wonderfully and just as I was wondering if I missed the “big twist” it hit. It took me entirely by surprise. I sat for a while reevaluating the story and then it came together. I saw the clues casually dropped through the text. I was blown away. However, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this twist the back cover teases. I don’t like to be that blindsided when it comes to stories I want to be able to see the connections come together as I’m reading. I like the “Oh!” moment more than the, “wait what?”. That’s just how I am, but I know that so many people will enjoy the crazy twists and turns. This was such a compelling read and I am excited to see what else this author comes out with. I give this book four out of five stars.
