We all struggle with that first month of school. Adjusting to a new 8 hour long school day is exhausting and taxing on our mental and physical health. We all want to come home to a nice rejuvenator that helps us get through the next few hours of homework. As much as we all want to fly off to some overseas vacation spot, we probably don't have the money--or the time--but what we do have is a good book (or at least I hope that's what we have). If you are one of those who doesn't have a new book on stock then read further I have some great recommendations that should get you through that first month.
I’ll give you the sun: Jandy Nelson
This book follows a brother and sister as they make their way through their high school years. Dealing with the constant troubles everyone faces; sibling rivalry (if you have siblings), sexuality, parent troubles, and loss. Struggling to fight their way past the darkness of their past and potentially their future. They begin to learn how to become their own selves while making others stronger, particularly the other sibling. Jandy Nelson really delves into the topic of pushing society's boundaries and the art world. DON'T BE DISMAYED! Just because this novel is about real-life there is still some surprising plot twists (I even gasped once) leaving you begging for more (or at least I was). This is a great book to see the beauty and art that is all around us. It's the pick me up you will need as you adjust to your new school life!
Fangirl: Rainbow Rowell
This one is about a girl named Cath who enters college as a freshman. She experiences making new friends, living with a polar opposite roommate, and struggling with classes on her own. She has a twin sister that, similar to her roommate, is very outgoing and social. Cath wants nothing more than to stay inside all day writing fanfic and just being quiet. This book includes all the struggles anyone faces going to a new school. The fear of the uncertain; people, friends, teachers, boyfriends, girlfriends. Everything we all face at some point or another can be found in this novel. Not only that but our main girl is a huge fangirl of a Harry-Potter-esque world. Cozy up in your bed and read this! A very happy and lighthearted novel to turn to when you want to escape those mounds of homework that are suffocating you.
All Fall Down: Ally Carter
This book is different than the first two as it is a dystopian novel. However, it is the perfect novel to help you leave the struggles of annoying classmates, stressful teachers, and troublesome homework. It is a relatively easy read at a medium length and simpler words. An easy wind-down after school read to help you rejuvenate and get back that energy. It has been a little while since I read it and I have been seriously contemplating reading it again! Maybe we will read it together to help our minds survive this first month of school ;)
Cinder: Marissa Meyer
One of my favorites. This book is a take on fairytale stories but with a darker sci-fi twist... my favorite genre (of course, I’m an uber-fan of Once Upon A Time). This story will suck you in so fast that when you come out you will literally look around yourself and say “What just happened?” (at least I did). This novel is a tad longer than the previous books on the list but as it is one of those that have such amazing content and high imagery life-like scenes it is a plus all the way. In the first book, we follow the modern-day cyborg Cinderella and her struggles with her evil stepmom and sisters. This book will fly you on a 3089 (I don’t know... just a very random futuristic date--in the novel its the 126th year of the third era) spaceship to another world that you may or may not want to leave as it is a little dangerous there--an epidemic has been rampaging around for quite some time. Buckle up and head down the milky way for an awesome adventure to surely take you away from the struggles of this world (but mostly school)!
Just a gift to you--a studying hamster to help get you through your homework! YOU GOT THIS!
